October Meeting Recap
We had a great meeting. Our guest speaker was Erika, an advocate from Sojourn Shelter. Her talk was very informative and quite eye opening for all of us. They offer many needed services for victims of domestic abuse (All FREE of charge) . I will try to get the materials scanned in the few days and get them emailed to you. There are many on going volunteer opportunities as well as the need for donations. They are having a Chilli Dinner November 13th at the Firefighters club and are in need of homemade desserts. If you can donate a dessert, please call 217.726.5100.

July Meeting Notes
Hey Gals,
We had a great meeting tonight. Nice to see everyone, especially Tammy and Cheryl, who we haven't seen since December, or was the time January?? HAHA
Anyway, our speaker was
Rachael Thomson with Kidzeum of Health & Science
What an exciting project!! She told us about the Kidzeum and the purpose of the project and it sounds fantastic!! I can't wait to see it and I'm sure it's going to be a huge educational asset to our community and it sounds like they are well on their way to making it a reality.
We got to see what it's going to look like, as well as what kids were saying about it. The basic design is a tree house and the kids in the presentation were so excited!
Inside, the kids will get a chance to walk through a replica of the human body, as well as learn how to be more "green" and it's going to be a different kind of "museum", because the kids will be encouraged to interact with the exhibits, instead of a "don't touch" approach. It's clear that the Kidzeum is going to be a favorite spot for the kids.
Be watching for emails from Judy regarding volunteer opportunities for the Kidzeum as they have some efforts coming up!!

Saddle Up!
Volunteer Information
UCP is identifying volunteers for Saddle Up!, therapeutic horseback riding. Therapeutic horseback riding is currently recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of recreational therapy for children with disabilities.
Who should become a volunteer?
Anyone with an interest in a career including the medical field, education or any human service field should volunteer. No experience with horses or children with varied disabilities is necessary. Training is provided so that you will be able to support attendees appropriately. Volunteers should be 14 years old or older.
What is the volunteer’s role?
Volunteers are a vital part of the program. Individuals help by side walking next to riders during lesson instruction, leading horses or preparing the equipment before a child rides.
Where does Saddle Up! meet?
Saddle Up! meets at Flatland Farm, just off Interstate 55, near Pawnee.
Why should you become a Volunteer?
Saddle Up! volunteers gain practical, hands on experience working with children who have a disability. In addition, Saddle Up! provides an excellent opportunity for volunteers to make a difference in the life of a child.
When are volunteers needed?
Saddle Up! meets Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Volunteer time slots last an hour and a half or three hours. Volunteers are expected to fulfill a five to six-week commitment, as riders rely on volunteers every week. The next session begins in September. A second fall session begins in October.

Ashley Thompson or Bridget Gilliam at 525-6522.
